I am interested to find out some information’s about this radio and its performance if used as mobile or portable unit within our climatical conditions, specially where this radio come with a handy auto tuner attached to it along with a screw driver type antenna like the ATAS-120.

All of the best

Dear Sir, I had the 897D and enjoyed it very much. For a mostly analogue radio without IF level DSP, it performed well for me. For a multi band/multi mode radio, I considered it a very good value. I especially enjoyed it for portable information. There are some very good accesories available for it. I may buy another one in the future.

Thank you my friend, I just seen one in real shape last night with a friend and one of our member order and received 2 days back, A71EL, to me it looked so solid and sound vey practical for portable operations and as a set will for sure perfom very nicely.

We are going to operate portable within the next 2 weeks as the WX condition start to improve out here and I will see its perfomance in real life with my friend, if so I might have to make an order for it accordingly.

Thank you my friend, for rejestring at www.dxqsl.net and also for your input to this thread, thank you again my friend and make youreslf at home, 73 from Qatar

Hello !
I am using a FT 897 D , as a "back up station" with a Fritzel FD 4 antenna. I works all ok. But do NOT use the original antennatuner.. It is no good. I have got my self a LDG AT-897 tuner. It tunes much better than the origina Yaesu tuner.
i have not used mine for portable op. yet, since it arrived her by me, when summer was almost gone. But I am planning to do some /P operation next summer from here.

I had looked at the radio for portable operating. With 2 batteries installed it would be nice and easy to use to bring late comers to a campsite once you see them. I have the earlier model of Yaesu ATAS-100 antenna with rubber boot instead of hard plastic upper on the screwdriver antenna. The antenna works great to the lowest portion of 40 meters 7 MHz. I unlocked the ham band restriction on my FT-100D but the tune button is still restricted to only allowing the radio to tune the antenna when it is set to a freq in the ham band. If you wonder about the ATAS-120 performance I talked to Germany, Spain and 9K2GS one night. I'm sure it was mostly the other stations antenna set up but none the less the antenna does perform especially near sea water. I've even talked to other mobiles in Australia and America during this low of the bands with the ATAS. I decided a whip mount would be best added just below the ATAS since it is much taller and would not be as effected by being a little bit on the side of the car. Of course the ATAS comes off when the whip goes on. Strangely the las time I tried a comparison on the air between the whip and ATAS-100 I was told no real difference. Could of been conditions but I mostly use the ATAS now for on the fly changing of bands while driving. The antenna is limited to 120 watts in case you are tempted to use an amp it can't be used.
