I just built a ten meter "groundplane" (a 5/8-wave verticle with ground radials).
It actually is making better use of the extensive ground field I planted in my back yard where it is presently, but I realise that when I raise it 30 feet off the ground, the radials will come into play. Theoretical gain is 3.2DBd, but I just know it works much better than a Solorcon, Antron99.
If interested, click here for the pics and the rest of the saga. (http://www.pbase.com/12footer/the_10meter_vertical_antenna_project) It was a real learning experience!

Thanks for checking it out, guys. Yes, Rashed, it was a lot of trial and error. I included the errors, as the theory behind them all is sound, and may help with different antenna designs. Things like the gamma rod, gamma ring as impedance matching devices may not have made it to the final antenna, but they might on the antenna someone else designs from those examples I shown. It was fun using this antenna as a test bed for that reason. The final design works great too.

My friend, I am covered antenna wise, not yet having on the post and waiting for A71BX to compelete his set up, then we will work on my set up, but for sure I like to do something for 80M, some thing without the redials thrown all over the place.
I am there looking for some thing different, I did try a vertical but never worked and never even been tuned to the 80M.

A 5/8 wave 80M vertical would work great.And an 80M vertical would be almost 200ft tall too.
But you are correct about the radials. Studies have shown that the more radials you plant in the ground, the better the result. I have somewhere between 1000 and 1200ft of burried wire around my small suburban 1/4 acre lot, so raising my little 10M vertical 30 feet may not make it's performance much better.
I guess a guy could insulate the base of a 200 foot tower and use it as the vertical element. It has been done many times before. However, it would be an engineering nightmare, tho it would also have that theoretical gain of 3.2DB over a half wave dipole... yummy! :)
A guy can dream I guess. I've seen some material used as spacers in cased piping that have 3"x6" blocks of neoprene or nylon. They could hold the base of a 200foot aluma tower, or simular structure -- but not the top :) Still, a thought.
